FG Says Over ₦600bn Cash Transfers Reached 10 Million Nigerian Households

Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction Minister Bernard Doro says the Federal Government has disbursed more than ₦600 billion in cash transfers to vulnerable Nigerians over the past three years.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Doro said the programme has reached more than 10 million households across the country.

The minister made the disclosure shortly after the Federal Government launched the $1 billion Renewed Hope Social Protection Programme, designed to move vulnerable Nigerians beyond temporary financial assistance toward sustainable economic empowerment.

One of the key components is the Household Prosperity and Empowerment Social Protection Project (HOPE-SP), which aims to coordinate social protection efforts and help households gradually move out of poverty.

According to Doro, the government plans to track beneficiaries and measure their progress toward becoming economically self-reliant.

The HOPE-SP programme targets about 7.6 million vulnerable households, with eligible beneficiaries expected to receive a one-time digital shock-response payment of ₦40,000.

Beneficiaries must be listed on the National Social Register and have their identities verified through their National Identification Number (NIN).

Government Defends Economic Reforms

Doro also defended the Federal Government’s economic reforms, including the removal of the petrol subsidy.

He argued that the reforms had contributed to greater economic stability and said Nigerians should ultimately assess whether the measures are improving their lives.

The minister rejected claims that seven million Nigerians had been pushed into poverty under the current administration, saying the government was working to reduce inflation and rebuild the economy.

Using China as an example, Doro said Nigeria could significantly reduce poverty if it maintained efforts over the long term.

He said the administration’s reforms had laid the foundation for rebuilding the Nigerian economy and expanding poverty-reduction efforts.
