The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested a man identified as Moferewa Maiye for allegedly impersonating an officer of the security agency in Abuja.
Maiye, who reportedly hails from Agbajojun Village in Mopamuro Local Government Area of Kogi State, was arrested at his hideout near NITEL Junction along Adetokunbo Ademola Way, Wuse II.
According to a security source, DSS operatives acted on credible intelligence and found the suspect wearing a DSS tactical uniform and carrying a fake pistol.
The source alleged that Maiye used the uniform and weapon to intimidate commuters and motorists and extort money from them.
During interrogation, the suspect reportedly claimed that the uniform belonged to his late brother, identified as Monday Maiye, who he said had been a DSS personnel before his death.
The suspect remains in custody while the DSS investigates how he obtained the uniform and other security equipment.
Investigators are also working to determine how long he may have been involved in alleged impersonation and extortion.
The DSS said the arrest highlights its concerns over individuals who impersonate security personnel to intimidate members of the public and engage in criminal activities.
