Dr Aisha Mustapha Elected New Kaduna NMA Chairperson

Dr Aisha Mustapha has been elected as the new Chairperson of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Kaduna State chapter, following an election held last week.

Dr Aisha is a specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and has distinguished herself through dedication, excellence and service to the healthcare sector. Before her election, she received several awards and recognitions, including an honour from Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, during the PECCIN Launch 2025.

She also received a Certificate of Excellence in Peer Reviewing from Global Academy Publisher in 2024 and the Impact Award 2023 from the Ovarian Cancer Coalition’s Every Woman Study.

Academically, Dr Aisha has recorded several achievements. In 2015, she emerged as the best-performing candidate in the WACS Part I examination in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. She also received the Best Lecturer award from medical students at Ahmadu Bello University in 2016 and 2017.

She graduated as the best student in Obstetrics and Gynaecology from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in 2008 and was also the Overall Best Student in the NECO examination at Federal Government College Kano.

As the new NMA Kaduna chairperson, Dr Aisha said her priorities would include protecting doctors’ rights, ensuring the full implementation of CONMESS salaries and allowances, improving doctors’ welfare, providing mental-health support, strengthening health insurance coverage, ensuring better working hours, providing legal protection for doctors and creating more opportunities for training and professional development.

Speaking during an interview, she said she contested the position to serve doctors and promote fairness and justice without discrimination.

Dr Aisha said she is originally from Kano State. She attended primary school in Hotoro before proceeding to Federal Government College Kano and later Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where she gained admission at about 16 or 17 years of age.

She currently lives in Zaria, is married and has three children. She began her medical career at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Shika, where she continues to work. She has also travelled to several countries for further education and professional training.

Before becoming NMA Kaduna chairperson, Dr Aisha served as Chairperson of the Nigerian Association of Women Doctors, Kaduna chapter, and also as Secretary of the Kaduna State branch of the NMA.

She expressed appreciation to her colleagues for entrusting her with the leadership position and pledged to defend their rights while leading with honesty, fairness and justice.

She urged members to remain united and work together towards the development of the association and improvement of healthcare services.

Addressing concerns about fairness across religious and ethnic differences within the association, Dr Aisha said the NMA is a professional organisation made up of educated and responsible people. She therefore promised to lead without bias or favouritism.

She called on members with ideas for improving the association to come forward with their suggestions and expressed gratitude to her husband, family and everyone who supported her journey.

She concluded by praying for the progress of Kaduna State and Nigeria as a whole.
