The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi chapter, has declared a total and comprehensive strike with immediate effect over unpaid salaries and allowances owed its members.
The decision was reached during an ASUU congress held on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, according to a statement signed by the union’s chapter chairperson, Terseer Abari.
The strike, tagged “No Pay, No Work,” will affect all academic activities at the university, including teaching, student supervision, examinations and statutory meetings.
ASUU said the university management had paid only two components of the Federal Government-ASUU 2025 agreement: the Consolidated Academic Staff Salaries and the Earned Academic Allowance.
The union explained that the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance and Professorial Allowance had only been paid for January and February 2026, while just 39 per cent of the CATA for March 2026 had been paid.
ASUU described the situation as an underpayment of salaries and called on the university authorities to settle all outstanding payments before academic activities can resume.
The union stated that the strike would remain in force until all outstanding salaries owed its members are fully paid.
