Nine people have been killed and several others injured after a fire broke out at a hotel in Kolkata, the capital of India’s West Bengal state, early Wednesday.
According to local reports, the fire trapped several people inside the building, prompting emergency responders to launch a major rescue operation.
A senior official, quoted by the Press Trust of India, confirmed that nine people had died and warned that the death toll could increase.
Authorities are continuing rescue and emergency operations while investigations into the cause of the fire are expected to follow.
