16 Bangladeshi Migrant Workers Killed in Saudi Factory Fire

At least 16 Bangladeshi migrant workers have died after a major fire broke out at a sofa manufacturing factory in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, officials in Bangladesh said.

The fire occurred on Sunday in the Musa Sanaiya industrial area of the Saudi capital.

Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs is monitoring the incident, while officials from the country’s embassy in Riyadh are coordinating with Saudi authorities to complete arrangements for the repatriation of the victims’ bodies.

Bangladesh’s Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister, Ariful Haque Choudhury, has directed officials to bring the bodies home as soon as possible and provide necessary government assistance and compensation to the bereaved families.

Saudi Arabia is the largest destination for Bangladeshi migrant workers, with about 3.5 million Bangladeshis living in the country. Bangladeshi workers in Saudi Arabia sent more than $2.7 billion in remittances to their home country last year.
