An American pilot has reportedly been killed and his aircraft set on fire by separatist rebels in Indonesia's conflict-ridden Papua region, in an attack the rebels described as a warning to both the Indonesian and United States governments.
The armed separatist group, the West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB), claimed responsibility for the incident, saying its fighters shot dead American pilot Nicholas F. Gosselin after his aircraft landed in Yahukimo, a remote district in Highland Papua Province.
According to the group's spokesperson, Sebby Sambom, the attack was intended to send a political message to Jakarta and Washington amid the long-running separatist conflict in the resource-rich region.
Indonesian authorities confirmed that the aircraft was found completely burned at a local airport. However, the government has not officially confirmed the pilot's death or attributed the attack to separatist fighters, stating that investigations into the incident are still ongoing.
The attack marks another escalation in the decades-long insurgency in Papua, where armed separatist groups have repeatedly targeted security forces, infrastructure and civilians while demanding independence from Indonesia.
Authorities are continuing efforts to verify the circumstances surrounding the incident as security operations in the region intensify.
