UN Investigation Says Sudan's RSF Committed Genocide in El-Fasher

A United Nations Fact-Finding Mission has concluded that Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF) committed acts of genocide during their campaign in El-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State.

According to the report released on Wednesday, the RSF and allied fighters carried out widespread atrocities, including mass killings, gang rapes, deliberate starvation, and attacks on civilians as part of a systematic campaign during and after the siege of the city.

Investigators said the RSF intentionally blocked humanitarian aid, targeted food production systems, and surrounded the city, creating conditions that led to severe hunger among residents. Survivors also reported horrific sexual violence, with some describing assaults carried out in rooms containing the bodies of recently killed relatives.

The RSF has rejected the allegations, insisting the accusations are fabricated by its opponents while accusing the Sudanese military of committing similar abuses.

The UN also warned that a similar humanitarian disaster could unfold in El-Obeid, a key city in North Kordofan currently surrounded by RSF forces. Human rights officials have documented reports of summary executions, torture, abductions, and sexual violence in the area.

The UN Human Rights Council has launched an urgent inquiry into the escalating violence, while the United Kingdom and several other countries have warned of the growing risk of mass atrocities as fighting intensifies around El-Obeid, where hundreds of thousands of civilians, including many displaced people, remain trapped.

The UN mission urged the international community to take immediate action to prevent further civilian suffering and avert another humanitarian catastrophe in Sudan.
