Uganda Declares End to Latest Ebola Outbreak

Uganda Declares End to Latest Ebola Outbreak

The Ugandan government has officially declared the country's latest Ebola outbreak over after successfully completing the mandatory 42-day monitoring period without recording any new infections.

Minister of Health Chris Baryomunsi announced the declaration on Tuesday, stating that intensive nationwide surveillance confirmed the outbreak had been contained.

The outbreak, declared in mid-May, infected 20 people and claimed two lives. According to health authorities, 18 patients recovered and were discharged, while both fatalities were citizens of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The last Ebola patient in Uganda, a Congolese national, was discharged on June 22, while the final Ugandan infected through local transmission recovered on June 16, marking the start of the 42-day countdown to officially end the outbreak.

Health officials noted that Uganda has developed strong expertise in responding to Ebola outbreaks, enabling authorities to contain recent epidemics with limited community transmission.

Uganda remains vulnerable to recurring Ebola outbreaks because its tropical forests are home to fruit bats, the virus's natural reservoir. Ebola spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids or tissues of infected individuals and can cause symptoms including severe headache, muscle pain, vomiting, and bleeding.
