Three sons of Iran's late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, attended his funeral prayers in Tehran on Sunday, while his successor and son, Mojtaba Khamenei, did not make a public appearance.
Iranian state television showed Mostafa, Meysam, and Masoud Khamenei praying beside the coffins of their father and four other family members during the ceremony at the Imam Khomeini Grand Mosalla in Tehran.
Mojtaba Khamenei, who succeeded his father as Iran's Supreme Leader following his death, was absent from the funeral. Reports indicate he sustained serious injuries during the February 28 Israeli and U.S. airstrikes that killed Ayatollah Khamenei and several members of his family.
The funeral marks the beginning of a week-long series of mourning events across Iran and Iraq. Following ceremonies in Tehran, Khamenei's remains will be taken to the holy city of Qom before being flown to the Iraqi shrine cities of Najaf and Karbala. The final burial is scheduled to take place in Mashhad, where he will be laid to rest near the shrine of Imam Reza.
Large crowds gathered throughout the night and into Sunday to pay their final respects, with many mourners seen praying, weeping, and beating their chests in tribute. Iranian authorities expect millions of people to participate in the nationwide funeral processions over the coming days.
The funeral comes as a ceasefire continues to hold following months of conflict between Iran, Israel, and the United States, with peace efforts temporarily paused during the mourning period.
