At least six people have died after a massive fire tore through a 10-storey apartment building in the Belgian city of Antwerp on Wednesday, emergency officials said.
The blaze broke out on the eighth floor of the residential tower in the Linkeroever district at about 9:53 a.m. local time, prompting a large-scale response from firefighters, ambulances and rescue teams. The building is home to more than 200 residents.
Authorities said several other people were injured, although the exact number has not yet been confirmed.
Firefighters battled heavy smoke and poor visibility as they worked to bring the fire under control and rescue trapped residents. Officials described the operation as particularly challenging due to the intensity of the blaze.
Residents recounted terrifying moments as smoke quickly filled the building. One survivor said the electricity failed moments before the fire alarm sounded, forcing people to seek refuge on balconies while awaiting rescue. Fire crews used ladder trucks to evacuate those trapped on higher floors.
Another resident said he helped a neighbour escape from a smoke-filled apartment but was unable to rescue her pet cat.
Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever expressed condolences to the victims and displaced residents, while praising emergency responders for their efforts to save lives and contain the fire.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the blaze, while emergency services continue to assess the full extent of the casualties and damage.
