The Nigerian Senate has approved a combined budget of N404.07 billion for the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, covering N170.10 billion for 2025 and N233.96 billion for 2026, to strengthen policing, security operations, and infrastructure across the country.
The approval followed the presentation of reports by the Senate Committee on Police Affairs, which explained that the 2025 budget was reintroduced after legal issues delayed the implementation of an earlier approved appropriation.
Lawmakers said the funding would support police training, equipment procurement, operational logistics, and infrastructure development aimed at improving the Force's capacity to tackle kidnapping, banditry, terrorism, and other security threats.
Senator Abdul Ahmed Ningi described the Police Trust Fund as a vital mechanism for addressing funding gaps in the Nigeria Police Force, noting that legal disputes had prevented the agency from spending allocated funds for nearly three years.
The Senate also approved the 2026 budget of N233.96 billion, with over 90 percent allocated to capital projects. Senate Chief Whip Mohammed Tahir Monguno praised the spending structure, urging other government agencies to prioritize capital expenditure.
Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin expressed confidence that the approved funds would strengthen the Nigeria Police Force and improve its ability to combat insecurity nationwide.
