Pakistan Coal Mine Explosion Claims at Least 32 Lives

At least 32 coal miners have died following a powerful explosion inside a coal mine in Sorange, near Quetta in Pakistan's southwestern Balochistan Province, according to local officials.

The explosion, believed to have been caused by a build-up of methane gas, occurred on Thursday while dozens of miners were working underground. Rescue teams recovered 29 bodies initially before locating three more victims, bringing the death toll to 32.

Officials said 36 miners were inside the mine when the blast occurred. Emergency responders continued searching for the remaining trapped workers, although hopes of finding survivors had become increasingly slim.

Authorities also confirmed that the explosion damaged two nearby coal mines, making rescue operations more difficult.

Coal mining accidents are frequent in Balochistan due to poor safety standards, inadequate ventilation, and the lack of proper gas detection systems. Labour groups have repeatedly called on mine owners to improve safety measures and provide better protective equipment for workers.

Despite the dangers and low wages, thousands of people in the province rely on coal mining as their primary source of income because of widespread unemployment and poverty.
