More than 50 migrants, including women and children, are feared to have drowned after a wooden boat carrying about 60 people capsized in the Mediterranean Sea off Libya's eastern coast on Tuesday.
According to security officials, 10 survivors were rescued near El-Bardaa Island, about 70 kilometres west of Tobruk, close to the Libyan-Egyptian border. The survivors said the overcrowded boat had departed early in the morning on a journey toward Europe.
The migrants were reported to be from several sub-Saharan African countries. Search and rescue efforts are continuing, while authorities fear the remaining passengers may have been lost at sea.
In a separate incident, rescue teams in Tobruk recovered four bodies and rescued 24 migrants after their boat drifted in Libyan waters for nearly two weeks. Officials said the migrants endured severe humanitarian conditions aboard the damaged vessel, leading to several deaths before rescuers arrived.
Libya remains one of the main transit routes for migrants attempting to reach Europe across the Mediterranean, despite the dangerous sea crossings and frequent fatal accidents.
Authorities have urged stronger international cooperation to address migrant smuggling and improve safety for those attempting the perilous journey.
