Syrian authorities have confirmed that one person was killed and 36 others injured following two explosions that struck central Damascus during French President Emmanuel Macron's official visit to the country.
According to Syria's Ministry of Health, 31 of the injured sustained minor wounds, while five others remain hospitalized in stable condition.
The explosions occurred near the Ministry of Tourism and the Four Seasons Hotel. Syria's Interior Ministry said one explosive device had been hidden inside a parked vehicle, while another was placed in a rubbish container. Security personnel were reportedly preparing to defuse the devices when they detonated.
President Macron, who had already left the hotel for talks with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, was not in the immediate area when the blasts occurred. Despite the attack, Macron continued with his visit, stressing that Syria "must not be destabilized" by acts of violence.
President al-Sharaa praised Macron for proceeding with the visit, describing his decision as a sign of courage.
The incident overshadowed Macron's historic trip—the first by a European Union head of state since the 2024 removal of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The visit also saw France and Syria sign 15 cooperation agreements covering sectors including aviation, healthcare, banking, water infrastructure, and road development.
After concluding their meetings in Damascus, Macron and al-Sharaa traveled to Ankara, Türkiye, to participate in the annual NATO summit.
