A new Gallup survey has revealed that scams in the United States caused an estimated $68 billion in financial losses in 2025, while nearly three in four victims said the experience negatively affected their mental health and wellbeing.
The poll, released on Tuesday, found that 6 percent of US adults were personally scammed last year, while another 4 percent said someone in their household had fallen victim.
According to Gallup, most victims lost $500 or less, but the average loss per scam reached $5,578 due to some cases involving tens of thousands of dollars. Overall, scammers stole an estimated $186 million every day in 2025.
The survey also found that lower-income households, people without a bachelor's degree, and Black and Hispanic adults were more likely to report being scammed than other groups.
Beyond financial losses, the emotional impact was significant. About 73 percent of people from households affected by scams said the experience harmed their mental health or wellbeing, with 28 percent describing the effect as very negative.
Gallup further reported that nearly one in four US adults has been scammed at some point in their lives, while 10 percent said they had fallen victim multiple times.
