French President Emmanuel Macron arrived in Syria on Monday for high-level talks with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, becoming the first Western European leader to visit the country since the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad in 2024.
Macron was received at Damascus International Airport by Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani before meeting with Syria's leadership. His visit comes just ahead of the NATO summit in Türkiye, where both Macron and al-Sharaa are expected to participate.
In a message shared on social media, Macron reaffirmed France's support for the Syrian people, expressing hope for a sovereign, united, and peaceful Syria. He said France is committed to helping the country open a new chapter of stability and regional cooperation.
According to Syrian state media, Macron was accompanied by a delegation of business leaders to discuss regional security, economic cooperation, and investment opportunities aimed at supporting Syria's reconstruction.
France has been one of the strongest European supporters of Syria's new government. During a meeting in Paris in 2025, Macron called for the removal of long-standing international sanctions on Syria, many of which have since been lifted.
Despite political progress, Syria continues to face major reconstruction challenges after more than a decade of conflict that devastated infrastructure and displaced millions of people. The country is expected to require hundreds of billions of dollars to rebuild and revive its economy.
