Iran has begun a seven-day state funeral for its late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with mourners and foreign dignitaries gathering in Tehran to pay their final respects.
Khamenei's body was placed in state at Tehran's Grand Mosalla on Friday, where senior government officials, religious leaders and delegations from more than 100 countries attended the opening ceremony. His coffin was draped with a red flag from the Imam Hussein Shrine in Karbala, a symbol of sacrifice and resistance in Shiite Islam.
The 86-year-old leader was killed in a February 28 air strike during the US-Israel war on Iran, alongside several members of his family. Funeral rites were delayed for months due to the conflict before being officially launched this week.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian joined mourners, while leaders from Pakistan, Iraq and Tajikistan were among the foreign guests expected at the ceremony. Iranian authorities said countries that supported the US-Israeli military campaign were not invited.
Security has been tightened across Tehran as large crowds prepare to attend public viewing beginning on Saturday. During the ceremony, Iran's Armed Forces Commander, Major-General Amir Hatami, vowed that the country would avenge Khamenei's death.
The funeral procession will continue through Tehran and Qom before briefly passing through Iraq. Khamenei is scheduled to be buried on July 9 at the Imam Ali Reza Shrine in Mashhad.
