A United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer fatally shot a Mexican national during an immigration enforcement operation in Houston, Texas, authorities said.
The deceased, identified as Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, was reportedly the target of a federal operation aimed at arresting individuals living in the United States without legal authorization.
According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Salgado Araujo allegedly attempted to flee the scene by driving his vehicle into an ICE law enforcement vehicle and trying to run over an officer. The agency said the officer opened fire in response to what it described as an immediate threat.
However, Salgado Araujo's family disputed the official account. His son told local Spanish-language television station Telemundo Houston that his father had been in the area searching for workers when the shooting occurred.
Surveillance footage reviewed by Reuters reportedly showed the aftermath of the incident, with the victim lying beside a white van as officers surrounded him. The footage did not clearly capture the moments leading up to the shooting.
The incident has prompted calls for an independent investigation. Democratic Representative Sylvia Garcia urged authorities to preserve and review all available evidence, including video recordings and officer communications, to ensure a transparent inquiry.
The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) also demanded a full and impartial investigation, saying the public deserves a complete account of what happened.
The shooting is the latest in a series of fatal encounters involving federal immigration officers since the Trump administration intensified immigration enforcement operations. According to reports, federal agents have carried out at least six fatal shootings during immigration-related operations since the crackdown began.
