A Gambian man, Lamin Badjie, has been remanded in prison after allegedly assaulting his wife and seriously injuring one of her eyes following an argument over the meal she served him.
The incident reportedly occurred last week in Foni Mandina, after Badjie became upset over the dinner prepared by his wife, Fatou Sanneh.
He was arrested and transferred to Brikama Police Station before being arraigned at the Brikama Magistrates' Court on Thursday, July 2, 2026. Badjie pleaded guilty to a charge of assault causing actual bodily harm.
The court fined him D100,000 and ordered him to pay an additional D100,000 in compensation to his wife. He was also remanded at Mile 2 Prison.
According to Fatou Sanneh, the altercation began after her husband returned home and asked to be served dinner.
"I served him nyankatang mixed with benachin, but while eating, he kept complaining that he did not want the food. I asked if he preferred the nyankatang on its own, but he continued complaining," she said.
She alleged that her husband then asked for water and spat on her as she went to get it. After she returned with the water, he allegedly threw a bowl in front of her and began beating her until his aunt intervened.
Fatou said the violence resumed after she remarked that "a man who beats his wife does not live long," adding that her husband became even more enraged and assaulted her again, leaving her with a serious eye injury.
She was initially taken to Kanilai Health Centre before being referred to Bwiam General Hospital, where she was admitted overnight for treatment.
The couple have two children together.
