The Federal Government has approved a significant increase in hazard allowances and other earned benefits for members of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) working in federal universities.
The revised remuneration package, which takes effect retrospectively from January 1, 2026, was approved following an agreement reached between the Federal Government and NASU on June 29, 2026.
Under the new package, annual hazard allowances for workers on CONTISS 1–5 have increased from ₦180,000 to ₦243,000, while employees on CONTISS 6–15 will now receive ₦486,000 annually, up from ₦360,000.
The government also approved higher responsibility allowances for senior non-teaching officials, including registrars, bursars, directors, deputy directors, heads of departments, and heads of sections. In addition, annual uniform and protective wear allowances of ₦80,000 have been introduced for eligible laboratory, workshop, and studio personnel.
Field trip, teaching practice, and industrial supervision allowances were also reviewed upward across various salary grades.
According to the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, the new package is aimed at improving the welfare of non-teaching staff while maintaining industrial harmony in Nigeria's federal universities.
The review follows months of negotiations, with NASU arguing that allowances established under the 2009 agreement had become inadequate due to inflation, the depreciation of the naira, and the rising cost of living. The government said the revised benefits are part of ongoing efforts to improve working conditions and ensure stability in the nation's tertiary education sector.
