El-Rufai’s Wife Appeals to Tinubu, Says Former Kaduna Governor Deserves Fair Treatment

Hajiya Asiya El-Rufai, wife of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure her husband receives fair treatment and his constitutional rights while facing legal proceedings.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja alongside El-Rufai’s second wife, Aichatou, Asiya said the family was not asking the President to stop the prosecution but to ensure that the former governor has access to medical care, legal representation, family visits, and bail on reasonable terms.

She expressed concern over her husband's health, stating that he suffers from high blood pressure and high blood sugar, and alleged that he has been denied access to his personal doctors. She also criticized the reported arrest of El-Rufai’s personal physician, Professor Bello Abubakar, describing it as an additional source of distress for the family.

Addressing President Tinubu directly, Asiya recalled her family's support during the 2023 presidential election campaign and urged the President to show compassion.

"We are not asking anyone to interfere with the judicial process," she said. "We only want him to enjoy the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution. If he is guilty, let the court decide. If he is innocent, let the court also decide."

She added that the family has been traumatized by El-Rufai’s continued detention and limited access to his lawyers, relatives, and medical team, saying the situation has placed them under constant emotional strain.

Asiya also questioned the circumstances surrounding the restriction placed on Professor Bello Abubakar from seeing El-Rufai and called for a proper investigation into a medical report reportedly issued by the National Hospital, Abuja.

According to the family, the restrictions have made it difficult for the former governor to adequately prepare his legal defence. They reiterated their call for a fair trial, respect for his constitutional rights, and bail on reasonable terms while court proceedings continue.
