The death toll from the collapse of a three-storey building in Ajuwon, Ogun State, has risen to three, while 12 people have been rescued alive, emergency officials have confirmed.
The building, located on Baale Road, collapsed on Monday afternoon following a heavy downpour and thunderstorm. It housed two shops on the ground floor and residential apartments on the upper floors.
The Lagos State Government deployed emergency responders and heavy rescue equipment to assist ongoing rescue and recovery operations after the Ogun State Government requested support.
According to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), rescue teams arrived at the scene on Tuesday morning alongside officials from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Nigeria Police Force, the Ogun State Fire Service, and other emergency agencies.
LASEMA said that, as of 11:42 a.m. on Tuesday, 12 adults had been rescued alive. The victims confirmed dead include an adult woman, a baby girl, and a 75-year-old man.
LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said Lagos' intervention demonstrates the state's commitment to regional cooperation during disasters.
He noted that emergencies know no boundaries and stressed the importance of collaboration among neighboring states to improve disaster response and save lives.
Oke-Osanyintolu also extended condolences to the families of the deceased, wished those injured a speedy recovery, and praised all emergency responders involved in the operation.
Rescue and recovery efforts are continuing as authorities work to ensure no one remains trapped beneath the rubble.
