At least nine farmers have been killed and several others abducted after armed bandits attacked farmlands in Kakangi village, Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
According to a security report, the attackers stormed the farms on Saturday and opened fire on farmers while they were working. Nine bodies were recovered, while local authorities identified six of the victims. A community leader, Kabiru Ishaq, said the death toll could be as high as 10.
The attack was reportedly carried out in retaliation after farmers killed one of the bandits during a failed robbery attempt earlier that day. The slain bandit's accomplices allegedly returned with reinforcements and launched the deadly assault.
Birnin Gwari has continued to face repeated attacks despite a peace agreement reached between local authorities and armed groups in November 2024. Last month, six farmers were killed and about 20 others kidnapped in a similar attack on Danauta village.
Armed gangs, commonly referred to as bandits, have intensified attacks on farming communities across northern and central Nigeria during the rainy season, targeting villages with killings, kidnappings for ransom, cattle theft, and looting.
