The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has said Nigerian troops are making significant progress in efforts to rescue the 39 pupils and seven teachers abducted in Oyo State.
Shaibu made the disclosure on Saturday during an interactive session with media executives in Port Harcourt as part of activities marking the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration.
The victims were kidnapped on May 15 from three schools in Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
According to the Army Chief, security forces are actively conducting operations and remain optimistic that the victims will soon be rescued and reunited with their families.
He also highlighted the military's ongoing operations across the country, saying troops have continued to record successes against insurgents, terrorists, bandits, and other criminal groups.
In the North-East, Shaibu said Operation Hadin Kai had neutralised hundreds of insurgents, including a senior Islamic State commander, Abu Bilal al-Minuki, in a joint effort with international partners.
He added that military operations in the North-West, North-Central, South-East, and South-South have improved security, curbed criminal activities, and helped protect critical national assets.
The Army Chief further announced that the Federal Government has approved the establishment of a new Nigerian Army depot in Amasiri-Edda, Ebonyi State, to strengthen military manpower.
He said the Nigerian Army is recruiting and training 28,000 personnel while equipping troops with modern armoured vehicles, drones, and advanced military technology to improve operational effectiveness nationwide.
Shaibu reaffirmed the Army's commitment to safeguarding Nigeria and responding decisively to emerging security threats.
