American engineer and educator Nathan Thomas has officially been recognized as the world's youngest male professor by Guinness World Records, setting a historic milestone at just 18 years and 346 days old.
Thomas earned the record after joining the faculty of Miami Dade College in August 2023, where he began teaching C for Engineers (COP 2270). His achievement ended a record that had stood for more than 300 years, previously held by Scottish mathematician Colin Maclaurin, who became a professor at age 19 in 1717.
Born on September 9, 2004, Thomas began his academic journey at an unusually young age. He enrolled at Miami Dade College through a dual-enrollment program when he was just 10 years old before transferring to Florida International University at age 14.
By the time he turned 18, Thomas had already earned both bachelor's and master's degrees in Electrical Engineering with honors, an achievement that placed him far ahead of most of his peers.
Despite teaching students close to his own age, Thomas said he focused on helping them succeed rather than allowing age to become an issue.
He credits his passion for engineering to his parents, who are both engineers, especially his mother, whom he says made difficult scientific concepts easier to understand during his childhood.
Thomas also believes teaching improves his own knowledge, describing it as one of the best ways to deepen his understanding while helping others learn.
In addition to his engineering accomplishments, he is currently pursuing a Juris Doctor (Law) degree at the University of Miami School of Law, with plans to specialize in intellectual property law focused on science and technology.
Outside academics, Thomas enjoys basketball, tennis, golf, classical piano, and listening to hip-hop and electronic dance music.
Reflecting on his remarkable journey, Thomas encouraged young people not to compare themselves with others but to remain focused on their personal goals, emphasizing that consistent effort and patience eventually lead to success.
His record-breaking achievement has drawn worldwide attention, inspiring students across the globe and demonstrating that age is not a barrier to academic excellence.
