18 Killed in Niger State Communal Clash as 15 Burn to Death

At least 18 people have lost their lives following a violent communal clash linked to a long-running land dispute in Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State.

According to the Niger State Police Command, 15 of the victims were trapped inside a two-bedroom house that was set ablaze by suspected attackers on Tuesday night in Angwan-Baago, near Godoro village. Another person was killed in a separate attack, bringing the total death toll from the crisis to 18.

Police said the violence began on June 29 after suspected gunmen shot and killed 25-year-old Ibrahim Musa in Godoro village. The killing reportedly sparked a reprisal attack in which members of a local vigilante group, known as Yansakai, allegedly blocked a road and killed 28-year-old Bashir Mazi.

Police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun said investigations are ongoing to identify those responsible for the attacks. He added that a reconciliation committee led by local government officials is working with security agencies to restore peace in the affected communities.

A joint team of police and military personnel has been deployed to the area to prevent further violence and maintain security.

A local source alleged that the conflict involved members of the Fulani and Kamuku communities, adding that several houses were destroyed and women and children were among those most affected.

Rafi Local Government Chairman Ayuba Katako confirmed the incident, saying security operatives had been mobilised to contain the situation while efforts continue to bring the perpetrators to justice.
