Fifteen Indian tourists have died after a speedboat carrying visitors capsized near Phu Quoc Island in southern Vietnam, local authorities confirmed on Saturday.
The vessel was transporting 32 Indian tourists and four crew members when it overturned while returning from Hon May Rut Ngoai Island to An Thoi International Port. Twenty-one people were rescued, while those injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Authorities said the accident occurred about 400 metres from the shore. The cause of the incident has not yet been determined, and an investigation is underway.
Witnesses said nearby boats rushed to the scene to help rescue passengers before Vietnamese border guards, the navy, and the coastguard arrived. Several victims were reportedly trapped inside the overturned boat, making rescue efforts more challenging.
The Indian Embassy in Hanoi said it has established emergency control rooms in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to assist victims' families and coordinate with Vietnamese authorities.
Phu Quoc, one of Vietnam's most popular tourist destinations, attracts millions of visitors each year with its white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters. The tragedy comes nearly a year after another deadly tourist boat accident in Ha Long Bay that claimed 39 lives.
