Shark Attack Claims Life of Spearfisherman Off Western Australia Coast

A 35-year-old man has died after a shark attack near Michaelmas Island off the coast of Albany in Western Australia.

According to police, the victim was spearfishing with family members when he was bitten by a shark estimated to be about 4.5 metres long. Emergency responders treated the man at the scene, but he later succumbed to his injuries.

Authorities said the shark species has not yet been identified. The incident occurred near Michaelmas Island, a remote area that attracts relatively few visitors.

Following the attack, Western Australia's Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development advised residents and visitors to exercise extra caution and stay informed about shark activity in the area.

The fatality marks Australia's fourth shark-related death of 2026. Similar incidents were reported in recent months near Rottnest Island in Western Australia, along the Queensland coast, and in Sydney Harbour, where a 12-year-old boy was killed in January.

Marine experts suggest that changing ocean temperatures and shifting shark migration patterns may be increasing encounters between sharks and humans. Australia records an average of around 20 shark attacks annually, with most occurring along the country's eastern and southeastern coastlines.
