Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has defended her earlier remarks about small-scale businesses, explaining that Federal Government empowerment programmes are not limited to akara sellers but also cover other petty traders.
Tinubu made the clarification on Monday during the inauguration of the newly constructed Abubakar Maje Haruna Hall at the Emir of Hadejia’s Palace in Jigawa State.
Her explanation followed criticism that trailed her previous comments mentioning businesses such as akara, roasted corn and kuli-kuli, with some Nigerians accusing her of downplaying the economic challenges facing citizens.
Addressing the controversy, the First Lady said the government had provided N100 million to the Jigawa State Government to support 2,000 petty traders.
She said the beneficiaries include tomato sellers, pepper sellers, vegetable traders, and others operating small businesses.
According to her, each beneficiary would receive N50,000 to help recapitalise and strengthen their businesses.
“We will continue to empower them and add to their resources so their businesses can become sustainable,” Tinubu said.
She added that criticism would not stop the government from continuing its intervention programmes aimed at supporting citizens.
The First Lady also encouraged Nigerians, especially young people, to explore the country’s agricultural and natural resources, saying Nigeria has many opportunities beyond oil.
