Ireland Bars Two Israeli Ministers Over Controversial Statements and Policies

Ireland has announced a travel ban on Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, citing concerns over their public statements and support for policies affecting Palestinians.

Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin confirmed the decision, stating that the ministers had promoted positions viewed by Ireland as incompatible with efforts to achieve peace and stability in the region. The move follows growing international criticism of remarks made by the two politicians regarding Palestinian territories and the future of Gaza.

Under the directive, Irish immigration authorities have been instructed to deny entry to both ministers should they attempt to visit the country.

Ben-Gvir and Smotrich are prominent members of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s governing coalition and have frequently advocated policies that have drawn criticism from human rights organizations and several foreign governments.

Martin also indicated that Ireland would push for broader measures at the European Union level, arguing that the ministers’ actions warrant further consideration by EU member states.

Ireland has emerged as one of Israel’s strongest critics in Europe during the ongoing Gaza conflict. In 2024, Dublin formally recognized a Palestinian state, a move that further strained relations between the two countries.

The latest decision places Ireland among a growing number of European nations that have imposed restrictions on the two Israeli officials amid continued international debate over the conflict and the treatment of Palestinians.
