The Federal Government, in partnership with the Lagos State Government and all 57 local government councils and local council development areas in the state, has launched a new school breakfast programme aimed at improving the health and academic performance of primary school pupils.
The initiative, known as Adopt-a-School: Snacks for Thought – PBAT FEEDS, was unveiled on Tuesday under the Renewed Hope National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme. It is designed as a public-private partnership that encourages companies, philanthropists, development partners and other stakeholders to sponsor nutritious breakfast meals for schoolchildren.
The official launch took place at the Lagos Island East Local Council Development Area, while similar events were held across Lagos' three senatorial districts.
In addition to breakfast packs, pupils received school bags, tablets, notebooks, water bottles, flasks and other educational materials.
Speaking at the event, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, described the programme as an investment in Nigeria's future, stressing that proper nutrition is essential for children's learning and development.
The National Programme Manager of the Renewed Hope National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme, Aderemi Adebowale, said the initiative would ensure that pupils begin each school day with nutritious meals to reduce classroom hunger and improve learning outcomes.
She added that a digital platform would enable Nigerians at home and abroad, corporate organisations, faith-based groups and philanthropists to adopt schools and sponsor breakfast meals as part of their corporate social responsibility.
Chairman of Lagos Island East LCDA, Muibi Folawiyo, said the programme would improve punctuality, boost school attendance and create a better learning environment. He also urged private organisations and community stakeholders to support the initiative.
Beneficiary pupils expressed gratitude to the Federal Government, Lagos State Government and local council authorities for providing free meals and educational materials, saying the programme would help them learn better.
