At least eight security personnel, including five soldiers and three members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), were killed after suspected Boko Haram insurgents launched a pre-dawn assault on a military base in Borno State.
The attack occurred on Friday at the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Mandaragirau, located in Biu Local Government Area under Sector 2 of Operation Hadin Kai.
According to the military, the insurgents attacked the facility around 3:00 a.m., taking advantage of heavy rainfall and poor visibility. Troops stationed at the base mounted a strong resistance and eventually repelled the assault after intense fighting.
In a statement, Acting Media Information Officer of Operation Hadin Kai, Lieutenant Colonel Haruna Sani, said the troops successfully prevented the terrorists from breaching the base and inflicted casualties on the attackers.
However, he confirmed that five soldiers lost their lives during the battle, while three CJTF members fighting alongside the troops were also killed. Several others sustained injuries and were airlifted for medical treatment.
“The wounded personnel are receiving appropriate care and remain in stable condition,” Sani stated.
He emphasized that the military remains in control of the base and has launched follow-up operations in the surrounding area to track down fleeing insurgents.
The military spokesman described the attack as a sign of desperation by terrorist groups facing sustained pressure from ongoing counterinsurgency operations across the North-East.
Meanwhile, local sources claimed the insurgents operated around the military position for nearly an hour during the storm. Community leaders also reported that more than one location may have come under attack.
President of the Borno South Youth Alliance, Samaila Kaigama, confirmed the incident and urged authorities to strengthen grassroots intelligence networks and community engagement to help detect and prevent future attacks.
Security forces have since reinforced the area as efforts continue to maintain pressure on terrorist elements operating within the region.
