The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned a staff member of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) over allegations of fraudulent salary collection amounting to ₦3,285,396.
The defendant, Segun Bode Adedeji, appeared before Justice E. G. Adekanmbi at the Edo State High Court on a four-count charge related to alleged financial misconduct.
According to the EFCC, investigations revealed that while employed at the University of Benin, the suspect also received salaries from the National Orthopedic Hospital in Benin City at the same time. The agency alleged that this amounted to unlawful “double salary” payments from two public institutions.
The anti-graft commission stated that intelligence and financial records showed that the accused received a total of ₦3.28 million through the overlapping salary payments, resulting in financial loss to the government.
The EFCC added that the prosecution is part of ongoing efforts to curb corruption and financial irregularities within public institutions across Nigeria.
The court did not immediately disclose the defendant’s plea or ruling on bail. The case has been adjourned for further hearing.
