DR Congo Reports 1,307 Confirmed Ebola Cases, 377 Deaths

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has confirmed that Ebola cases in the country have risen to 1,307, including 377 deaths.

The latest update from health authorities shows that confirmed cases have been recorded in Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu provinces. Reports also indicate that the outbreak has spread to a fourth province, Haut-Uele, which borders South Sudan and the Central African Republic.

A source from the DRC’s National Institute of Biomedical Research said the new case in Haut-Uele was linked to an infected person who travelled from Bunia, the capital of Ituri province. The person later died, and health officials are working to trace contacts and stop further transmission.

The spread to Haut-Uele means the entire northeastern region of the country, with a population of about 15 million people, is now affected.

The current outbreak, which began in May, is the 17th Ebola outbreak recorded in the DRC. Ituri province remains the centre of the crisis, with health workers warning that the virus has spread through contact during funeral ceremonies.

Aid workers have faced challenges in affected communities due to mistrust, making it difficult to organise safe burials and prevent further infections.

Health workers have also reported shortages of protective equipment, medicines, testing kits, and body bags at treatment centres.
