Deadly Floods Hit Ghana’s Capital as 13 People Die and More Rain Looms

At least 13 people have died in Ghana’s capital, Accra, after heavy rainfall caused severe flooding across the city, authorities have confirmed.

The Ghana National Fire Service said rescue operations are ongoing, with more than 470 people already saved from affected areas. Officials warned that the death toll could rise as emergency teams continue searching flood-hit communities.

Several homes, roads, vehicles, and businesses were submerged after intense rainfall, with low-lying areas suffering the worst damage. The government has advised residents in vulnerable locations to move to safer, higher ground and avoid travelling through flooded roads.

The Ghana Meteorological Agency has also warned that more storms and rainfall could hit parts of southern Ghana, increasing the risk of further flooding.

Power companies temporarily shut electricity supply to some affected areas after floodwaters reached critical infrastructure, while security agencies including the police, military, and disaster response teams were deployed.

Officials blamed the scale of the flooding partly on poor drainage systems, blocked waterways, and illegal construction along flood paths. President John Mahama called for action against structures built on waterways.

Environmental experts say the disaster highlights growing concerns over climate change and rapid urban development in Accra.
