Cholera Outbreak in Northeast Nigeria Kills 90, Infects Over 12,000 – UN

At least 90 people have died and more than 12,000 others have been infected in a rapidly spreading cholera outbreak in Nigeria’s conflict-affected Borno State, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

The outbreak, which began in early May, has continued to worsen, with the death toll rising from 74 previously reported cases.

OCHA said humanitarian organisations are increasing efforts to provide treatment, monitor new infections, and improve access to clean water as authorities work to control the disease.

The UN agency added that an emergency fund of $4 million is supporting the response, but warned that more resources are urgently needed to strengthen prevention and medical care.

Health officials say poor sanitation, limited clean water supplies, and displacement caused by years of conflict have contributed to the spread of cholera in the region.
