Bandits Raid Student Residence, Kidnap Six in Zamfara

Armed kidnappers have abducted six students of the Federal Polytechnic, Kaura Namoda, in Zamfara State, while the sister of a former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, and her twin sons were also seized in separate incidents, raising fresh concerns about Nigeria’s worsening security crisis.

The students were reportedly taken from an off-campus residence in Kaura Namoda during a late-night attack on Wednesday. Local residents said seven students were initially kidnapped, but one managed to escape, leaving six others—three males and three females—in captivity.

Authorities in Zamfara confirmed the incident and said security personnel have launched operations to secure the victims’ release. Police spokesperson DSP Yazid Abubakar stated that investigators believe the attackers gained access to the residence after a student left the door open during the night.

The latest abduction has intensified fears among residents, many of whom say repeated attacks have forced students and workers to consider leaving the area. Community leaders have urged security agencies to strengthen operations against armed groups operating in nearby forests.

Just hours after the Zamfara attack, gunmen kidnapped Busayo Adegoke John-Paul, the sister of former Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu, along with her 12-year-old twin sons in Ibadan, Oyo State. The victims were reportedly attacked while traveling to school early Wednesday morning.

Adelabu’s family confirmed the incident and appealed for public support while security agencies continue efforts to locate and rescue the victims. The Oyo State Police Command said investigations are underway and tactical teams have been deployed.

The incidents come amid growing national concern over rising cases of kidnapping, particularly targeting students, schools, and travelers. Security analysts warn that educational institutions remain attractive targets for criminal groups because they are often less protected and attract significant public attention.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar described the Ibadan kidnapping as evidence that insecurity has become a nationwide threat affecting both ordinary citizens and prominent public figures. He called on the federal government to take stronger action to address the security challenges facing the country.

Meanwhile, lawmakers and political leaders have renewed calls for improved implementation of school security measures and stronger collaboration between security agencies and local communities to prevent further attacks.

Security forces in both Zamfara and Oyo states say rescue operations remain ongoing as families await the safe return of the abducted victims.
