At least six people have been killed after heavy rains triggered severe flooding and landslides in northeastern Brazil, authorities confirmed on Saturday.
The fatalities were reported in the states of Pernambuco and Paraíba following two consecutive days of intense rainfall.
In Pernambuco, flooding struck the capital Recife, where two people lost their lives. Two more deaths were recorded in the nearby city of Olinda. Around 1,500 residents were displaced as homes were inundated.
Meanwhile, in Paraíba, the cities of João Pessoa and Campina Grande were among the worst affected. At least two people died in the state, with another 1,500 people forced to flee their homes.
Brazil’s National Center for Risk and Disaster Management issued multiple emergency alerts during the storms and raised its operational status to maximum alert due to ongoing risks and weather forecasts.
Although rainfall eased on Saturday, officials warned residents to remain cautious as conditions could still worsen.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said the federal government is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating support with local authorities to assist affected communities.
Experts say extreme rainfall events have become increasingly frequent in Brazil, with recent studies indicating a sharp rise in disasters such as floods and landslides over the past three decades.
