Global Flotilla Activists Held After Interception in International Waters, 87 Begin Hunger Strike

At least 87 activists detained from a Gaza-bound humanitarian flotilla have reportedly begun a hunger strike following their interception by Israeli forces. Organisers of the Global Sumud Flotilla say Israeli naval units stopped the final vessel of a convoy attempting to reach the Gaza Strip from departure points including Türkiye’s Marmaris port.

According to organisers, more than 400 participants from multiple countries were taken into custody after the boats were halted in international waters. The Israeli government described the mission as a “PR stunt” and said all detainees were being transferred to Israel for consular processing.

The flotilla aimed to challenge the blockade on the Gaza Strip, but Israeli forces intercepted vessels during operations in waters near Cyprus, with allegations emerging of forceful tactics during the raids. Several countries have condemned the interceptions, calling them violations of international law.

Some detainees, including citizens from Indonesia and Ireland, are among those reported held, while diplomatic responses continue from affected countries.
