Arctic and Antarctic Regions Go Without Sunlight for Months Due to Polar Night Phenomenon
Certain regions of the world experience extended periods without sunlight due to a natural phenomenon known as the polar night, where the sun remains below the horizon for weeks or even months during winter.
This occurs mainly in areas located within or near the Arctic and Antarctic Circles, where the tilt of the Earth prevents direct sunlight from reaching the surface for long durations.
Countries and territories affected include parts of Norway (Svalbard), Canada (Nunavut), Alaska in the United States, Russia, Finland, Sweden, and Antarctica, where the absence of sunlight can last from several weeks to nearly six months in extreme cases.
For example, in Svalbard, Norway, the sun does not rise for about three months, while locations closer to the poles can experience darkness for even longer periods. In Antarctica, especially at the South Pole, darkness can last for up to six months.
Despite this, the sky is not completely dark throughout the period, as moonlight, starlight, and faint twilight often remain visible.
Experts explain that this phenomenon is caused by the Earth’s axial tilt, which causes the poles to lean away from the sun during winter months.
People living in these regions adapt by using artificial lighting, maintaining indoor activities, and taking vitamin D supplements to cope with the lack of sunlight. Communities also hold celebrations to mark the return of the sun after long periods of darkness.
Overall, while no country experiences total darkness year-round, several northern and southern regions undergo prolonged sunlight absence each winter due to natural astronomical conditions.
