What is Lauh Mahfuz (لوح محفوظ)?

Lauh Mahfuz in English means “The Preserved Tablet.” It is a profound concept in Islamic belief referring to a hidden, divine record in which Allah ﷻ has written and محفوظ (perfectly preserved) all matters of creation.

The Lauh Mahfuz is not a physical object in the worldly sense, but part of the unseen (غيب) known only to Allah. It represents His absolute knowledge, power, and control over the universe.

Everything that has happened, is happening, and will happen—down to the smallest detail—is already written in this Preserved Tablet. This includes:

The destiny (Qadr) of every human being

The lifespan, رزق (provision), and actions of all creatures

Major and minor events throughout history

The unfolding of the universe until the Day of Judgment.

Nothing occurs outside what Allah has already recorded in it, and nothing can alter His ultimate knowledge.

Connection to Qadr (Divine Decree).

Belief in Lauh Mahfuz is closely tied to Iman in Qadr (Divine Decree), one of the six pillars of faith. It teaches that:

Allah’s knowledge is complete and timeless

What is written is based on His wisdom and justice.

Humans still have responsibility for their choices, even though Allah knows them beforehand

Qur’anic Reference

Allah ﷻ says:

> “Nay, it is a Glorious Qur’an, in a Preserved Tablet.”

(Surah Al-Buruj 85:21–22)

This verse highlights that even the Qur’an itself is محفوظ in the Lauh Mahfuz, emphasizing its divine protection and authenticity.

Peace of heart, knowing everything happens by Allah’s plan

Trust (Tawakkul) in Allah during hardships

Humility, recognizing the limits of human knowledge

Patience and gratitude in all situations
