How to do if you missed first rakat of Maghrib.
If you missed the first rak‘ah of Maghrib prayer, here is what you should do
According to the Maliki school of fiqh, if you missed the first rak‘ah of Maghrib and joined the congregation in the second rak‘ah, your prayer is completed like this:
What you should do (Maliki ruling)
1. Join the imam
You join the imam in the 2nd rak‘ah.
You continue and sit with the imam in the 3rd rak‘ah and finish the prayer with him.
2. After the imam gives salām.
You do NOT finish immediately with the imam.
You stand up calmly to complete the rak‘ah you missed.
3. Make up the missed rak‘ah.
Since you missed 1st rak‘ah, you now pray:
1 rak‘ah only
In this rak‘ah:
Recite Surah Al-Fātiḥah
Add another surah or verses (recommended in Maghrib)
Complete rukū‘ and sujūd normally.
4. Tashahhud and ending.
After this make-up rak‘ah, sit for final tashahhud
Then give salām to complete your prayer.
Important Maliki notes.
You always make up what you missed after the imam finishes
The make-up rak‘ah is treated as your first rak‘ah in order
Recitation is done silently since you are praying alone at that stage.
No sujūd sahw is required in this situation unless you made an extra/missing action.
