Allahumma Ajirni fi musibati Hadith - Meaning and Explanation

The phrase “Allahumma Ajirni fi musibati” comes from an authentic Hadith and is a supplication taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ for times of calamity or hardship. 

Arabic:

اللَّهُمَّ أَجِرْنِي فِي مُصِيبَتِي

Transliteration:

Allahumma ajirni fi musibati

Meaning:

"O Allah, reward me in my affliction"

or

"O Allah, compensate me for my calamity."

1. Explanation (Context).

This supplication is specifically recommended when a person faces a calamity, loss, or hardship.

It was narrated from Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri (RA) that the Prophet ﷺ said:

> "Whoever is afflicted with a calamity and says: ‘Allahumma ajirni fi musibati wa akhlif li khayran minha’

(O Allah, reward me in my affliction and replace it for me with something better), Allah will compensate him for his affliction and give him something better in return."

(Sunan at-Tirmidhi 1405, Hadith graded Hasan Sahih)

2. Components of the Du‘a:

Allahumma – “O Allah” (calling upon God directly).

Ajirni – “Reward me / compensate me”

Fi musibati – “in my affliction / in my calamity”

3. Recommended Addition:

Scholars often recommend adding:

وَاخْلِفْ لِي خَيْرًا مِنْهَا

“Wa akhlif li khayran minha” – “and replace it for me with something better than it.”

This makes the du‘a more complete and increases hope for divine reward and relief.

4. Spiritual Benefit:

It helps a believer remain patient (sabr) in trials.

It transforms the calamity into a source of reward.

It encourages reliance on Allah and reduces despair.

How to Use.

Upon hearing bad news, facing illness, loss, or any trial, say:

اللَّهُمَّ أَجِرْنِي فِي مُصِيبَتِي وَاخْلِفْ لِي خَيْرًا مِنْهَا

Repeat it sincerely, with belief that Allah will reward your patience.
