Who is ʿAmmar ibn Yasir (رضي الله عنه)?

Ammar ibn Yasir (رضي الله عنه) was one of the earliest companions of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and a shining example of steadfast faith, patience, and sacrifice in Islam. His life reflects the struggles of the first Muslims and the strength required to remain firm upon the truth.

Early Life and Embracing Islam:

ʿAmmar was born into a humble family in Makkah. His father, Yasir ibn Amir, was from Yemen, and his mother, Sumayyah bint Khayyat (رضي الله عنها), was among the earliest women to accept Islam.

As soon as the message of Islam began to spread, ʿAmmar and his parents were quick to accept it, making them part of the first generation of believers (As-Sabiqun al-Awwalun).

Severe Persecution and the First Martyrs:

Because they had no powerful tribe to protect them, the family of Yasir became targets of brutal torture by the Quraysh. They were dragged into the scorching desert and punished mercilessly to force them to abandon Islam.

Despite this:

Sumayyah (رضي الله عنها) remained firm until she was killed, becoming the first martyr in Islam

Yasir (رضي الله عنه) was also martyred shortly after

ʿAmmar endured extreme torture but survived

During these painful moments, the Prophet (ﷺ) would console them with the famous words:

> “Patience, O family of Yasir, for indeed your meeting place is Paradise.”

A Test of Faith and Allah’s Mercy:

Under intense torture, ʿAmmar (رضي الله عنه) was once forced to say words against Islam. This caused him deep sorrow, and he went to the Prophet (ﷺ) in distress.

The Prophet asked him about his heart, and ʿAmmar replied that his heart was firm in faith. The Prophet (ﷺ) reassured him, and Allah revealed:

> “Except for one who is forced [to renounce his religion] while his heart is secure in faith…”

(Surah An-Nahl 16:106)

This verse established an important principle in Islam: faith resides in the heart, and coercion does not invalidate sincere belief.

His Virtue and Status:

ʿAmmar (رضي الله عنه) held a special place among the companions. The Prophet (ﷺ) praised him on several occasions, saying:

> “ʿAmmar is filled with faith from head to toe.”

He also said:

> “Woe to ʿAmmar! He will be killed by a rebellious group.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari & Muslim)

These statements highlight his high spiritual rank and the عظيمة (greatness) of his ایمان.

Contributions to Islam:

ʿAmmar (رضي الله عنه) actively participated in the growth of the Muslim community:

He migrated to Madinah (Hijrah)

He helped in the construction of the Prophet’s Mosque

He took part in major battles alongside the Prophet (ﷺ)

He remained committed to truth and justice throughout his life.

His Martyrdom:

ʿAmmar (رضي الله عنه) lived a long life filled with service to Islam. During the caliphate of Ali ibn Abi Talib (رضي الله عنه), he supported justice and truth.

He was eventually martyred in the Battle of Siffin (657 CE) at an advanced age—over 90 years old—fulfilling the prophecy of the Prophet (ﷺ).
