The Importance of Kindness in Islam

Kindness in Islam (rahmah – mercy, and ihsan – excellence in conduct) is not just a moral virtue; it is a comprehensive way of life that shapes a Muslim’s relationship with Allah, with people, and with all of creation. It reflects the beauty of Islam and the sincerity of one’s faith.

1. Kindness is a Divine Command and a Path to Excellence:

Allah ﷻ commands believers not only to be just, but to go beyond justice and show kindness:

> “Indeed, Allah commands justice, excellence (ihsan), and giving to relatives…” (Qur’an 16:90)

Ihsan means doing what is best, even when it is not required. It is to forgive when you have the right to retaliate, to give when you are not obliged, and to treat others better than they treat you.

2. Allah Himself is Most Kind and Merciful:

Kindness is rooted in the Names and Attributes of Allah:

Ar-Rahman (The Most Merciful)

Ar-Raheem (The Especially Merciful)

Al-Lateef (The Most Gentle and Subtle)

The Prophet ﷺ said:

> “Allah is Gentle and loves gentleness in all matters.” (Bukhari & Muslim)

This means a believer should reflect these qualities in daily life—being gentle in speech, patient in behavior, and compassionate in dealing with others.

3. The Prophet ﷺ: The Perfect Example of Kindness:

The life of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is the greatest example of kindness:

He forgave those who harmed him

He showed mercy to children and the weak

He treated his wives with love and respect

He was kind even to enemies

At the conquest of Makkah, instead of revenge, he said:

> “Go, for you are free.”

This level of mercy shows that true strength lies in forgiveness, not in harshness.

4. Kindness is a Sign of True Faith (Iman):

Kindness is directly connected to the completeness of one’s faith:

> “None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.” (Bukhari & Muslim)

A true believer:

Avoids harming others

Helps those in need

Feels compassion for others’ struggles

Without kindness, faith becomes incomplete.

5. Kindness Brings Allah’s Mercy and Forgiveness:

Acts of kindness, even small ones, can lead to great rewards:

A man was forgiven for giving water to a thirsty dog (Bukhari)

A woman was punished for being cruel to a cat (Bukhari)

This teaches that Islam values mercy toward all living beings, not just humans.

6. Kindness in Speech and Communication:

Islam emphasizes gentle and respectful speech:

> “And speak to people good [words].” (Qur’an 2:83)

Even when correcting others or دعوت (calling to Islam), Allah says:

> “Speak to him with gentle speech…” (Qur’an 20:44)

Social interactions

Online communication

Harsh words can destroy hearts, while kind words heal them.

7. Kindness Strengthens Families and Communities.

Islam teaches kindness in every relationship:

Parents:

> “Do not even say ‘uff’ to them…” (Qur’an 17:23)

> “And live with them in kindness.” (Qur’an 4:19)

Neighbors:

The Prophet ﷺ emphasized their rights repeatedly

The Poor and Needy:

Charity (sadaqah) is a form of kindness that purifies wealth and soul

A kind society is a strong and united society.

8. Kindness is Not Weakness:

Some people think kindness means ضعف (weakness), but Islam teaches the opposite:

Kindness requires patience and self-control

It reflects strength of character

It earns respect and love

The Prophet ﷺ was the strongest of people, yet the most gentle.

9. Kindness is Rewarded in Every Situation:

The Prophet ﷺ said:

> “There is a reward for kindness to every living thing.” (Bukhari & Muslim)

Even simple acts count:

Smiling

Removing harm from the road

Helping someone carry a burden

Saying a good word

All are acts of charity in Islam.

10. Kindness Leads to Jannah:

Kindness is a means of دخول الجنة (entering Paradise). The Prophet ﷺ taught that those who are merciful will receive mercy from Allah.

A heart filled with kindness is a heart close to Allah.
